A PICTURE of concentration, Michael Bennett makes a minute addition to a tiny model of the First Fleet flagship HMS Sirius.
It’s a labour of love for the semi-retired architect and miniaturist from Rosebay who has been working on the model for hundreds of hours over the past three years.
The 10cm replica is one of a series of models Michael is making to illustrate the history of Australian immigration beginning with the arrival of the Dutch in the 1600s and ending with the Norwegian freighter MV Tampa, which rescued 433 refugees and five crew from a distressed fishing vessel in international waters off Australia in 2001.
Michael has finished seven ships in the series and has four to go. “Which is likely going to take me the rest of my life,” he said with a laugh.
Michael’s love of model making began as a boy. “I was shortsighted as a child and I’ve always liked small delicate things,” he told The Senior.
As well as the intricate manufacture of the models, Michael loves the intensive research that ensures they are historically correct. He spent time on board the MV Tampa and spoke about the refugee rescue with the captain.
He credits persistence, good hand-eye co-ordination and problem-solving skills for his success.
A variety of materials go into the models, including timber from slow-growing trees such as American basswood, holly and boxwood; copper wire and plastic. And he’s always on the lookout for everyday items he can adapt for his miniatures.
Michael will exhibit his works at the Sydney Model Shipbuilding Clubs’ 2018 Expo this month.
More than 100 models are expected to be on display, from tiny miniatures to three-metre long radio-controlled vessels.
There will be models of clipper ships, 18th century ships, paddle steamers, contemporary warships, ships in bottles, hydroplanes and racing yachts.
The EXPO is at the Georges River 16ft Sailing Club in Sanoni Avenue, Sandringham. Saturday, August 18, 10am-5pm and Sunday, August 19, 10am-4pm. Admission free.
