TCHAIKOVSKY'S much-loved Piano Concerto No.1 will be among the highlights when the Australian Youth Orchestra teams up with Russian pianist Andrey Gugnin in Sydney and Brisbane in July.
The orchestra and the 2016 Sydney International Piano Competition winner will present a dazzlingly fresh performance of the work, brimming with charming Russian folk melodies.
Conducted under the baton of Courtney Lewis, the concert will open with one of Britten's Sinfonia da requiem, followed by Rachmaninov's driving Symphonic Dances. In an unusual twist, the orchestra will also feature a young saxophonist within its woodwind section.
Gugnin has performed as a recitalist, chamber music partner and soloist with orchestras in more than 20 countries and has played in venues such as the Louvre, Carnegie Hall, Moscow's Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and Vienna's Musikverein.
