VW ENTHUSIASTS from all over the country will converge on the northern NSW town of Macksville at the end of July for the biennial Volkswagon Spectacular.
Kombies, Polos, Passats, Karman Ghias, notchbacks, fastbacks, station wagons, T4s, Country Buggies, Manx Buggies and the original car of the people - the Beetle - will turn the attractive tourist town into a mecca for all things VW with up to 700 vehicles expected to turn up for the nine-day event.
The Volkswagon Spectacular began in 1984 when Mark and Donna Pell, who had a VW repairs and spare parts business in Nambucca Heads, decided to organise a get-together for VW owners on the North Coast.
The day was so successful it became an annual event and by the late '90s it had grown so popular and required so much organising that Mark and Donna had to make it a biennial event.
This year the event runs from July 29-August 6 with the undisputed highlight being the convoy of vehicles from Macksville Showgrounds to Nambucca Heads for a street parade and Show and Shine followed by a barbecue, live music, swap meet, remote control car competition and later in the day a charity auction and fancy dress theme.
However, the whole week is a smorgasbord of activities - not just for the auto aficionado but for visitors and locals alike.
There'll be sausage sizzles, talks, walks, cruises, movie nights, dinners, demonstrations, night markets, a skydiving display, children's activities and a chance to get up close and personal with the hundreds of VeeDubs that make the trek.
Donna said the spectacular is remarkable for its friendliness with VeeDub owners coming again and again. "It's just like one big family," she said.
