A 10-year-old boy from Robertson has been reunited with his “best friend” thanks to the power of social media.

Banjo Campbell was left heartbroken when his pet cockatiel Zeus was accidentally let out and flew away.

His family searched for the bird and called out to it for days, but were convinced he wouldn’t survive.

Banjo and his family were sad to lose the bird, as it was a much-loved part of the family.

That was, until the family received an excited call from the boy’s school teacher, who knew how sad the boy had been about his missing bird.

The teacher noticed a post from the Robertson Commons Facebook page by resident Roy Johansen.

Mr Johansen’s neighbour Michael found the bird when it flew down from a tree and landed on his chest.

The family got in contact with Mr Johansen and Michael and collected Zeus, who was well looked after while he was away from his family.

Banjo said he was thrilled to be reunited with his pet bird.

“I was really, really excited to get him back. He’s my best friend,” he said.

Banjo’s mother Harriet Goodall shared the good news on the Robertson Commons Facebook page, which was met with a positive response from the community.

She said the reunion was due to the power of social media and people in small towns such as Robertson.

“A big thank you to the community. I think there’s a negative energy around those Facebook groups sometimes. It was good to be able to put up a positive post. It’s good to live in a small town,” she said.
