HISTORY lovers can delve into the fascinating past of the Sydney suburb of Randwick – just by using their smartphone.
The Randwick Heritage Walk is a free guided tour on the Dictionary of Sydney app.
The walking tour takes in some of the best historical buildings and sites in the suburb, providing a fascinating insight into Randwick’s past.
The new tour, accompanied by contemporary and historical images and GPS guided maps, was developed after the success of the app’s Convict Parramatta and SydneyHarbourIslands walking tours.
Whether on foot or from the comfort of their armchair, urban explorers can discover little-known snippets about the suburb, including the fact that Australia’s very first statue of Captain James Cook was erected there in 1874.
The tour was written by Sydney historian and writer Catie Gilchrist.
Dr Gilchrist has written widely on topics including the harbour islands, and profiles on many Sydney identities, including notorious “Queen of Woolloomooloo” and madam Tilly
Devine and controversial early 20th-century sex reformer William Chidley.
