MORE than 42,000 nature-loving Australians took time out of their busy schedules to enjoy the birds around them for last year’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count.
And the event – considered the biggest citizen science project in Australia – is on again this year from October 17-23.
Last year’s count resulted in more than one million birds from 563 species being counted.
The top 10 most common species remained unchanged from the previous years, with the rainbow lorikeet taking out the number one spot overall (it was the most common bird counted in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia).
The rest of the top 10, in order, were the noisy miner, Australian magpie, sulphur-crested cockatoo, house sparrow, galah, red wattlebird, common myna, welcome swallow and silver gull.
To find out more about the bird sightings in your state and around Australia, you can download the species list from the website.
There is also an app you can download to your phone from Google Play or iTunes that helps you identify, map and record the birds you see.
