The roundball game has increased in popularity in Victoria since the inception of the A-League and the rise of our men’s and women’s national teams on the world stage.
Large numbers of young people play in many different competitions, but A-League team Melbourne City is also creating opportunities for seniors to get involved.
The club’s City in the Community program successfully applied to VicHealth for funding to bring walking football to town, based on a highly popular idea introduced in the UK.
George Halkias is co- ordinating the project for Melbourne City, with 10 programs now up and running. “Initially we thought it would be like the UK over here, which essentially involves playing social and competitive football at a walking pace,” he said.
“But there are many seniors who have limited mobility and still want to participate. For many it’s a strong part of their culture.
“Some of our programs do involve walking football competitions, but others are designed for seniors to participate while seated – shooting at goal, passing the ball, kicking, catching, throwing.
“There are many physical benefits to gentle exercise for older, less mobile people, and this gives them the motivation and confidence to still do things that challenge them. It also keeps the mind ticking over.”
George said the social aspect was important, with participants having fun, laughing and interacting. And there are plenty who have lost none of their competitive instincts.
“We have fun celebrating goals and there’s lots of banter,” he said. “It’s also provided an opportunity for young people to get involved. We work with university students studying sports leadership who help run sessions.”
One of the weekly programs began at the City of Yarra’s Willow View Activity Centre in Collingwood late last year. “We have a great group here and they love being involved,” said community engagement officer Kerrie McLean.
“They really look forward to it each week.”
George said Melbourne City and Vic Health were pleased with the way the program had taken off.
“We’re looking at ways we can keep building. “We will evaluate the program and we want to continue working with local government and a range of different agencies and community groups.
“We might explore areas like corporate sponsorship.
"We’d like to hear from anyone who can help maintain the momentum that has come as more people are hearing about it.”
