A UNIQUE opportunity to meet the Ainu people who live on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido is being offered by toursgallery.
Prior to Japanese trading and settlement, as far back as 1600, Ainu were the main inhabitants of this vast island. A society of hunter-gatherers, they lived mainly by hunting bears and fishing.
Today's visitors can learn about Ainu dance, art and music from descendants who want to keep their culture alive.
Toursgallery's 16-day tour exploring Hokkaido starts on October 10 and coincides with the peak of autumn-coloured foliage.
Limited to only 15 people it is priced at $8850 per person twin share. Travellers stay in both traditional Japanese style ryokans and western hotels.
