A 99-year-old swimmer has broken the world record in the 50m Freestyle at the Commonwealth Games trials on the Gold Coast.
Albany Creek man George Corones, who turns 100 in April, swam the 50-metre freestyle swim in 56.12 seconds on Thursday.
The Albany Creek Masters Swimming Club member swam alone, as the only swimmer in his 100-104 age group.
The special race was held at the Commonwealth Games swimming trials to give Mr Corones, who only took up swimming seriously when he was 80, the chance to set a world record.
Australian Dolphins Swim Team celebrated the news on its Facebook page, writing "We have just witnessed history in the making!"
Masters swimmers compete in the age bracket that corresponds with their birthday that year.
Masters Swimming convinced Swimming Australia to stage special events for Mr Corones at the Commonwealth Games trials at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre to give him the chance to set long course world records in the 50m breaststroke and freestyle.
