Hundreds of people attended a gala evening at the State Reception Centre on International Womens Day last month to acknowledge the achievements of a remarkable collection of Western Australian women.
The event was the induction of 10 women into the Women’s Hall of Fame. The announcement of inductees was made by the International Womens Day Collaboration in collaboration with the Ishar Multicultural Women’s Health Centre.
The organisers said that over the years many extraordinary WA women have left their mark in everything from their local communities to business, politics, sport, health and education.
Those attending the event included WA Governor Kerry Sanderson, Minister for Women’s Interests Liza Harvey and Women’s Hall of Fame chairwoman Andrea Credo.
The 2016 inductees are: Erica Smyth (women in mining); Glenda Kickett (social work in Aboriginal sectors); Drisana Levitzke-Gray (deaf people in society); Holly-ann Martin (Safe4Kids child protection education); Oriel Green (Indigenous rights, participation and reconciliation); Cheryl Davenport (politics); Margaret Seares (the arts and education); Carmel McLure (equality in the legal profession); Annette Knight (service to local government and volunteering); and Pam Halbert (one of the first female Anglican priests in Australia). Posthumous inductees to the Women’s Roll of Honour include Sister Mary Martin Kelly and Melvina Alice Rowley for their work for children and families and Aboriginal Australians, respectively.
