TASMANIA - It's time to put on your party hat, lace up your walking shoes and get ready to have a ball – Seniors Week 2017 is on our doorstep.
Seniors across the state will be trying something new, dancing, singing and getting creative for the annual celebration of all things senior from October 16-22.
Organised by the Council on the Ageing Tasmania, this year’s event will have a special focus on the great outdoors.
And you don’t need to miss a thing. Grab a copy of the free 96-page official Seniors Week Guide from selected Woolworths supermarkets, LINCs, libraries, Service Tasmania shops, Community Health Centres and selected pharmacies. You can also download a copy of the program at www.cotatas.org.au
Let the fun begin!
Join in: you’ll have a ball!
Inspired by a senior sports carnival held at a YMCA centre in Canberra, the Launceston branch will throw open its doors to seniors at the end of the month.
YMCA already holds classes designed especially for seniors, such as Healthy Hearts, Bone Fit, Pilates and carpet bowls, and will add to that during Seniors Week with a Seniors Fun Sports Spectacular Day.
The four-hour event will focus on the mind, body and spirit.
Activities will include forming groups to play games, relays and tapping balloons over the net.
“It’s simple, easy motor skills, but things they haven’t done for a while,” said chief executive Jodie Johnson.
“Last year we had around 14 teams and they all had a ball. We’re hoping it’ll be similar this year.”
The YMCA hopes seniors will form their own teams and engage with staff so the day includes activities they want to do.
“It’s involving everyone in the community,” Ms Johnson said.
“We’re hoping to get more involved with more homes and organisations and build the team spirit.
“Everyone who has ever played sport in their lives still loves it. It’s great for the attitude too.”
The Seniors Fun Sports Spectacular Day is at YMCA Launceston on October 25 from 10am-2pm.
Tickets are $5 and include lunch.
