THE latest wave of canine crime fighters have been given their names, after a public competition that received almost 60,000 suggestions.
The Queensland Police Service kicked off proceedings last Thursday and gave the public six days to submit entries to name the seven puppies.
A total of 59,449 suggestions were received, almost double the amount when the competition ran in 2015.
The winners were Gilly and Gator for the male dogs and Gidget, Georgie, Gabby, Gemma and Gypsy for the females.
The final winning names were decided by QPS Dog Squad officers but drawn from some of the most popular suggestions submitted, and represent a significant step in the puppies' development.
"The G litter are now ready to be collected by carers from around the state who will look after them until they are old enough to begin the next series of training," Commissioner Ian Stewart said.
The puppies are a few weeks old, but when old enough they will begin training to become either drug detection dogs or general purpose police dogs.
At present there are 62 general purpose dogs, five firearm and explosive detection dogs and 10 drug detection dogs in the Dog Squad operating across the state.
