SEEN a spider and wondered what sort it is? A new app can help you identify it.
Spidentify guides users step by step to determine the type of spider - whether it be big or itsy bitsy.
The app came about after its creator, spider expert Alan Henderson from Minibeast Wildlife, was inundated daily with spider questions.
"People are fascinated and they're terrified," he said. "We get requests every day: What is this spider? Is it dangerous to my kids? We want to help allay some of that fear."
Alan said while Australia is home to a small number of dangerous spiders, the majority are harmless.
"Unfortunately there's so much misinformation out there about our native spiders. We're told they chase and attack us; they've got flesh-eating bites. These myths spread like wildfire.
"So many tourists come to Australia really concerned about our spiders. Spidentify will be really helpful for many international visitors."
Users can compare their mystery spider against stunning high-resolution photographs taken by Alan and Caitlin Henderson, accompanied by detailed expert information written in simple language. Each species is given a colour-coded danger rating.
The app can be used as a traditional field guiwhere users can browse by categories including geographical region, spider family and habitat. It also addresses common questions and dispels myths and urban legends.
DETAILS: Spidentify is available from the App Store and Google Play for $4.49.
