FORMER military servicemen and women in the City of Melton are being urged to share their stories as part of a memorial commemorating Australian troops.
Last year, developers Woodlea unveiled the first stage of a 500-metre Walk of Honour at Rockbank in Melbourne’s west that once housed a post- World War II communications depot.
The walk, in the Aintree estate, will mirror the Avenues of Honour in Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat. It is due to be completed by Remembrance Day in November.
Along the Woodlea walk will be educational plaques, each featured on a linked smartphone app commemorating all significant military conflicts involving Australian troops, including the Boer War, WWI, WWII, peacekeeping missions, and the Korean, Vietnam, Gulf and Afghanistan wars.
Caroline Springs RSL Sub-branch has been involved in the project since the beginning, researching the stories and people that will form part of the walk of honour. They include local veterans John Naidu, who served in Afghanistan, and the sub-branch’s oldest member Allan Godfrey, who saw service in World War II.
The RSL now wants to hear from service personnel with a local connection, aiming to select people and family stories to be incorporated in the walk.
The key research focus has now turned to the Korean War, through Vietnam and up to missions where Australian troops are still engaged.
The war experiences in their country of origin are also welcomed from more recently arrived citizens.
