A GROUP of bodysurfing seniors has taken on legend status at Middleton Beach in Albany.
Known as the Granny Grommets, the 35-strong group of women, aged from 50- 83, meet every Friday morning to hit the waves.
The group formed in 1999, and local surf guru Tony Harrison provides training to ensure new members can handle conditions.
Anne Fisher, 78, has been part of the group since she moved to Albany in 2001.
“I originally lived in Sydney and then in England for 27 years,” she said. “I just couldn’t wait to get back into the sea and surf.
“The Granny Grommets are the most fantastic group of diverse women from all walks of life.
“People around here can’t wait to turn 50 so they can join in.
“It is so much fun.
“There’s nothing more exhilarating than catching a wave.”
Anne said the women had varying degrees of ability, but they all had a great time. “Some stay in the white water and some go further out,” she said.
“I am known as one of the more mad ones as I really do feel comfortable out there in the ocean.”
