FOR an organisation that helps so many, volunteers with Sailability are dedicated and are driven to make a difference in our local community.
Maureen Allen is one volunteer who has seen both sides of the story, first bringing her husband to sail and now helps as a volunteer.
“When I first heard about Sailability my late husband was in care, so we would come down and he would go out on the water as a crew member and absolutely loved it,” Mrs Allen said.
“It was so wonderful to be able to see him so happy and enjoying himself out on the water.
“As an avid sailor for many years, it was great that he was still able to get out on the water with the assistance of Sailability.
“When he passed away I wanted to keep coming and help the people that had brought him so much joy, so I signed up to be a volunteer.”
Mrs Allen said it is truly incredible to be able to see those who are handicapped have access to something that brings them so much happiness.
“We take people from all ages out on the water and it is just wonderful and so rewarding to see them so happy,” she said.
“I know how much it meant to my husband to come out and spend time on the water so I can understand how special it is for carers to watch their loved ones on the boats.
“The best part about coming and volunteering is seeing the happy faces when they get back to land, the sheer excitement about what they have just been able to do.”
Sailability is a fully volunteer organisation, currently with over 74 volunteers in Port Macquarie who, during the summer months, every Wednesday morning, takes up to 60 clients for a sail.
As a volunteer, Mrs Allen is responsible for checking clients in when they first arrive and ensuring they have the necessary equipment to get them on the boats safely.
“My volunteer role is ensuring those who go out on the water have the necessary equipment to sail, from life jackets to slings to whatever they need.
“It is great to know you are helping to make a difference for someone.”
