Perfect job for an un-retiring chap

Rudi, from Adelaide, is a volunteer Red Cross driver and twice a week, sometimes more, he picks up elderly or disabled people, or those who can’t drive and need transport, and takes them to medical or other appointments.

It’s a door-to-door service. Sometimes Rudi and his fellow drivers take the role even further and help their infirm passengers inside, making sure they’re delivered to their appointment safely.

Sometimes the passengers are nervous about their appointment, but half an hour in the car with gregarious Rudi and they’re much more relaxed by the time they arrive.

After resigning from a senior management role with SA Health, Rudi knew he needed something to do.

“I was too young and too healthy to do nothing seven days a week,” he told The Senior.

Rudi heard about volunteer driving, decided to give it a go and hasn’t looked back.

“Within a few months it was evident I was able to help numerous people who didn’t have anyone else,” he said.

“It’s very satisfying and rewarding.”

The drivers transport people to appointments and are trained in advanced first aid and can be called on for transport roles in the event of bushfires or even overseas emergencies.

Rudi, who is also a justice of the peace, recommends volunteering with the Red Cross to anyone not working and looking for something to do.

“We need more drivers but there are lots of other volunteering roles; there’s something for just about everyone.”
