ON Sunday mornings a dozen or so mostly senior swimmers from the Bentleigh RSL swimming club make a splash.
The competition is keen, but you don’t have to be Kyle Chalmers to take gold.
Swimmers range in age from their 30s to their 70s, with men and women competing in handicap races over 25, 50 and 100 metres.
The winner is the one closest to their individual time over each distance.
It means everyone has an equal chance of winning but, according to Dieter Haspel, it’s more about having fun and keeping fit and active.
“Most of us are seniors,” he said.
“Swimming is a non-weight bearing activity; it’s good for the joints and mobility.
“We don’t try to break records – anyone can compete and anyone can win.
“As you get older, you tend to slow down, but with handicap swimming, like golf, you can stay involved.”
After the swim, members generally get together for a barbecue or sandwiches, and they also meet at Bentleigh RSL on Friday nights.
The club started 46 years ago, and two of the current number are foundation members.
Swims are held on Sunday mornings, except for the last Sunday each month, at Caulfield Grammar’s indoor pool.
Bentleigh is one of three RSL swimming clubs in the state. The others are Mentone and Box Hill.
Each year the three Victorian clubs, together with Albury, get together for carnivals. A national carnival is also held, which includes swimmers from clubs in NSW andQueensland.
Bentleigh welcomes new members and junior swimmers are encouraged.
