FOLLOWING recent floods and extreme weather conditions which have swept the country, the founder of online power tool retailer MyGenerator Sean Connolly has issued a series of tips on how to prepare for extreme weather events.
Mr Connolly said he had a number of tips for those preparing for floods and storms or facing the prospect of evacuation.
He advised people to make sure to prepare an emergency kit with a torch, food, a first aid kit, water, blankets, clothing and toiletries.
Mr Connolly also suggested that people at any risk of flooding or storm damage should make a list of irreplaceable household items and to place all personal and valuable documents in a sealed bag.
He also suggested taking photos before leaving a property during an evacuation to assist with insurance claims, turning off the mains power and water, removing all mobile phones and chargers from the house and putting sandbags in the toilets to prevent sewage back-flow.
"There is nothing enjoyable about a natural disaster. Preparation is the key to making a horrible situation bearable during and after a flood," he said.
He said it was also essential that people knew about flood safety precautions for electricity which include remaining cautious at all times, raising and elevating appliances to keep them dry when possible and not using wet appliances.
He said nobody who had left during a flood should re-enter before ensuring electrical wiring had been shut off or disconnected, advised people to follow road signs and stressed not to use a body part or conductive material to hold the meter box open.
He added that steps like investing in a back up generator, keeping the car's fuel tank full and making sure to have extra cash on hand could also be highly beneficial.
