WHETHER you’re a nan, nanna or grandma; pop, pa or grandad, this Grandparents Day is all about you!
From picking up the little ones after school to raising grandchildren, grandparents will tell you sharing time with grandkids is a rewarding, if sometimes exhausting, experience.
Which is why NSW Grandparents Day on October 29 is all about saying thank you to the thousands of grandparents and older people around the state.
Whether you help out in your grandchildren’s school, take them on special outings, help mind the children while their parents work, or read them their favourite stories, nans and pops are being invited to take part in a raft of activities celebrating their vital role.
Many public schools are inviting grandparents into classrooms for morning teas and special performances, while councils across the state will hold Grandparents Day celebrations. Grandparent and kinship carer support groups will also celebrate with picnics and barbecue events.
The state’s Grandparent of the Year will also be announced during the week.
Last year, 65-year-old Austral woman Jessica Bennett received the top award for her work volunteering at her grandchildren’s school.
Head of Primary at Regents Park Christian School, Bob Ping, said Ms Bennett was strongly involved in the lives of her grandchildren Eva and Sebastian, as the children’s mother worked long hours.
Describing Ms Bennett as an “absolute block of gold”, he said the students saw her as “part of the furniture, and her grandchildren have graciously allowed their classmates to view Ms Bennett as their grandma, too”.
