ASTHMA sufferers are being advised to have a plan in place to manage their condition with with soaring pollen levels expected across Sydney today set to affect many people living with respiratory conditions.
Warmer weather heightens the risk of asthma attack, allergies and hayfever for many sufferers due to an increase in pollen and other seasonal airborne allergens during spring and smoke during the summer bushfire season.
NSW Ambulance spokesperson, Joel Bardsley, said it was important asthma sufferers consulted with their GP to develop an asthma management plan or reassess their existing plan to ensure they stand the best chance of avoiding a serious attack.
“Asthma sufferers should understand what triggers their condition and have an effective plan in place to manage symptoms to ensure they can get out and enjoy the warmer months without risking a major attack,” he said.
“A serious asthma attack can be fatal in only minutes, so it is absolutely vital asthma sufferers carry their medication with them at all times, and call Triple Zero (000) and ask for Ambulance should their symptoms become severe.
Asthma is estimated to affect one in 10 Australians, with mild asthma usually best treated with “reliever puffers” such as Ventolin and avoiding asthma triggers.
To ensure asthma symptoms are kept under control, sufferers are advised to:
- · Make an appointment with their Doctor to discuss your asthma management plan.
- · Follow your asthma management plan closely if they have one.
- · Minimise exposure to the things that trigger asthma such as cigarette smoke.
