EVERY day 244 people are diagnosed with dementia.
To help shed light on this growing disease, University of Queensland academics have published an online resource, The Brain: Dementia.
"The publication is an essential resource for anyone living with or affected by dementia, one of society's most pressing health problems," said Queensland Brain Institute director Pankaj Sah.
"We explain the science behind dementia - its causes and risk factors - in an accessible and informative way.
Professor Sah said some of the latest research was also explained, including the breakthrough discovery of using ultrasound as a potential treatment from the institute's Professor Jurgen Gotz and his team.
"They have found ultrasound could one day be used to better deliver Alzheimer's drugs into the brain and reduce disease symptoms."
The 24-page publication was produced in partnership with Alzheimer's Australia. It covers types of dementia and their causes; risk factors including genetics and lifestyle choices; and diagnosing and living with dementia.
"Dementia's tendrils reach far and wide - nearly all of us know somebody affected by the condition, whether it be a family member, friend or colleague."
