MORE than 10,000 Queenslanders in need will be on the receiving end of almost 500,000 nutritionally balanced meals this winter.
The meals, delivered by Meals on Wheels, aim to bridge the gap in many people’s diets at a time of year when they can be more susceptible to illness.
The service has stressed the importance of consuming nutritious meals with a high intake of fibre, vitamins and protein to protect against the common cold.
“In the winter months, people look to heartier foods to stay warm, but these meals might not necessarily be providing their bodies with what they need to stay healthy if they’re not packed with nourishing ingredients,” said Queensland Meals on Wheels Foodservice dietitian Karen Abbey.
“The Meals on Wheels service is great because it gives people access to nutritionally balanced, hearty meals that provide them with the nutrients they need, in the comfort of their own home.”
Meals on Wheels delivers almost two million quality meals around the state each year. But that’s just part of what it does.
It also provides clients and their loved ones with companionship and safety and wellness checks each day.
The service relies on volunteers to deliver the meals and associated services.
