IS your perfume making you ill?
New University of Melbourne research found one third of Australians reported health problems when exposed to common fragranced products such as air fresheners, cleaning products, laundry supplies and personal care products.
Migraine, headaches, breathing difficulties, dizziness, rashes, congestion, seizures and nausea were among some of the problems reported by research participants.
Lead researcher Anne Steinemann described the situation as an "epidemic".
"Fragranced products are creating health problems across Australia," Professor Steinemann said.
"The effects can be immediate, severe and potentially disabling.
"But they can also be subtle and people may not realise they're being affected."
Professor Steinemann surveyed 1098 people from across Australia for her research.
The findings were published in the journal Preventive Medicine Reports.
