FRESH air, nature, gentle exercise and the company of like-minded people – what a great way to spend a few hours and as a bonus get a bit fitter.
Green Gym: Where health and fitness meets conservation is a new and exciting free health and wellness program for people aged 50-80 in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Based on an award-winning program from the UK, it is being run by Conservation Volunteers Australia, the country’s largest practical conservation charity.
Each session runs for three hours and includes free transport to a Green Gym location from a central meeting point.
After a gentle warm-up participants are guided on practical conservation and gardening activities to help transform community parks and gardens.
Activities range from gentle to moderate so are suitable for people of varying fitness levels and abilities and no prior experience is needed.
At the end of the session there’s a gentle cool-down.
The emphasis is on fun, health and social interaction while doing something meaningful for the community.
Morning (10am-1pm) and afternoon (1.30-4.30pm) sessions are available on Mondays at Centennial Parklands; Wednesdays at Randwick Community Centre and Environment Park; and Fridays at Bicentennial Park, La Perouse.
Each session is limited to nine people and a team leader. Places are limited and bookings are essential.
