COULD you walk a million steps in 20 weeks? Here's your chance to find out.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has launched the One Million Steps campaign in partnership with the Heart Foundation to encourage Aussies to get moving for better health.
The campaign gives participants 20 weeks to walk towards the magic target – a milestone that will earn you a certificate and entry to prize draws along the way. Alternatively, you can complete 100 group walks.
And keeping track of those steps is easy if you download the Heart Foundation Walking App, available on iPhone and Android, and register.
If you don’t have a smartphone, you can join one of the many Heart Foundation Walking groups around the nation by visiting walking.heartfoundation.org.au and the walk organiser will track your walking group attendance.
Why Walk?
- Walking for an average of 30 minutes a day can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes by a third.
- What’s good for your heart is also good for your brain, helping stave off the decline in memory, planning and thinking skills that can occur with ageing.
- It’s good for psychological health, helping to improve self-esteem, alertness, mood and sleep quality.
