A NEW MURAL featuring giants of Australian cinema is sure to get people in Goodwood talking.
That’s according to Capri Theatre general manager Rob Jordan, who said the artwork, set to be splashed on the building’s Gilbert Street facade, will be a “real conversation starter”.
He said the large-scale abstract art piece will pay homage to Australia’s film history – with a contemporary twist.
From the past it will feature quirky depictions of Crocodile Dundee, The Man from Snowy River and Mad Max. But it will also refer to the theatre’s owners, the Theatre Organ Society, and the historic venue’s stunning Wurlitzer organ and art deco detailing.
The artwork will be the sequel to the Capri’s well-known mural that was painted over as part of a $60,000 makeover of the State Heritage-Listed theatre this year,
“The old girl has had a major facelift this year, with the outside being painted and restored to its original glamour, including new art deco lighting,” Mr Jordan said.
He said the work could not have been completed without the help of the Master Painters Association of SA and Construction Industry Training Board of SA.
“Essentially we had the best of the best volunteering to paint the building, which fits in nicely with the fact that The Capri is staffed mostly by volunteers.”
Street artists Jake Holmes and Vans The Omega have been commissioned to paint the mural.
“There’s lots of reasons to head on down to The Capri and catch a latest release movie, tuck into some Haigh’s chocolates, indulge in a glass of vino and check out all of our hard work,” Mr Jordan said.
