FORGET the Hollywood version of the gladiator. In real life they were far more ruthless. They are brought to life in the latest historical account by Barry Strauss, titled The Spartacus War. As the title suggests, it is Spartacus the Thracian gladiator who started a rebellion against Rome, who is the book's hero. For two years Spartacus led his army of slaves and desperadoes, leaving his Roman enemies in their wake as his loyal soldiers followed his inspirational lead.
The Spartacus War, published by Orion, is $55 (hard cover) at leading book sellers.
