FINE wineries and unique landscapes are just two of the reasons a road trip through the secluded Clare Valley and majestic Flinders Ranges should be on everyone’s bucket list.
A five-day itinerary will allow plenty of time to see this fantastic part of the state.
About 90 minutes’ drive from Adelaide, the ClareValley wine region is a hidden gem with rolling countryside and picture-postcard farmland.
Made up of more than 30 towns and many small villages, it is famed for its world-class wines, particularly Australian riesling, and emerging foodie scene.
Stop for a gourmet lunch and wine tastings at one of the wineries and cellar doors. Then hire a bike and work off your lunch with a leisurely cycle through the vineyards as you explore the 35km Riesling Trail.
Alternatively, check out the many markets and fairs, from the Auburn Markets and Clare Valley Food Wine and Art Market to the Burra Show.
There are has many accommodation options, from boutique bed and breakfasts to motels and hotels.
From Clare, head to Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges via the historic town of Mintaro and the colonial Georgian-style mansion of Martindale Hall.
Along the way you’ll pass through Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges, which is a good place to grab a bite to eat. Try the North Star Hotel.
From here, drive north to the quaint town of Quorn. From there you can take a ride on the historic Pichi Richi Railway through the beautiful Pichi Richi Pass.
After Quorn, it’s about 90 minutes to Wilpena Pound in Flinders Ranges National Park.
An enormous natural amphitheatre, the pound offers breathtaking scenery, rich Aboriginal and European history, wildlife and a great chance to unwind.
For somewhere to stay there are eco-retreats, station stays, cabins or tents.
Wilpena Pound has some of the best hiking trails, bushwalks and 4WD experiences in the country.
To explore its wonders, you can head off on one of the many walking tracks, guided 4WD tours or self-drive many of the trails.
Climb to the 1171-metre high St Mary’s Peak for the best view of the landmark. Also look out for Indigenous rock art and native wildlife.
From Wilpena Pound it’s a 95km drive to Parachilna via Blinman, where you can take a historic mine tour. Here you will find the Prairie Hotel outback pub, an excellent choice if you’re looking for a place to stay.
Heading back towards Adelaide, there are a variety of routes. If you’re still not sated with the good things in life, the Barossa Valley is a seriously good option.
