FREMANTLE'S West End has become the largest single area to be heritage listed on the WA State Register.
The 200,000 sq m site features 250 buildings and was officially listed in the State Register of Heritage Places on November 17.
Heritage Minister Albert Jacob said the West End site embodied "the exuberance of the gold boom era".
"Fremantle's West End is a rare example of a highly intact port city business district and is particularly notable for its impressive variety of gold boom era buildings," Mr Jacob said.
"It includes former banks, pubs, hotels, warehouses, import-export businesses and shipping companies that speak to its maritime heritage."
The area is bordered by Phillimore St in the north, Market St in the east, Collie St and Marine Terrace to the south and Little High St in the west.
"The recognition of the precinct will enhance the area's appeal as a tourism destination," Mr Jacob said.
He added the site's listing on the State Register did not mean the area could not be altered in the future.
"It simply means that development has to be sensitive to the heritage values of the precinct."
