WHEN it comes to remote destinations, the Pitcairn Islands are a true frontier.
Now, an updated website aims to make it easier to visit these South Pacific islands half way between New Zealand and Peru.
While there are four islands in the group, the 49 permanent residents live on the major island, Pitcairn.
Most are from four families descended from the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions, who arrived there in 1790.
Pitcairn Islands Tourism Travel co-ordinator Heather Menzies said demand for visiting Pitcairn was growing, and the updated website reflected this interes.
"The update follows on from our new re-population website, launched in December," she said.
"Pitcairn is looking to not only build our arrivals but also attract those seeking a lifestyle change."
Shipping services are provided by Stoney Creek Shipping of New Zealand on the 486-tonne cargo-passenger vessel MV Claymore II, which offers 12 round-trips annually between Mangareva in French Polynesia and Pitcairn Island.
Visitors can stay in homestay accommodation, studio apartments or two and three-bedroom homes and the island is surrounded by the world's largest continuous marine reserve and is home to fascinating native plant and animal species.
