WHAT began as a small gathering of Tasmanian winemakers 15 years ago has become an annual celebration.
Red Wine Weekend now attracts more than 50 boutique vineyards from around the state that share 75 different wines with more than 1200 people over the two days.
Wine South president John Rees, who grows grapes at Nandroya Vineyard at Margate, said many smaller wineries were involved, as well as larger labels from regions including the Tamar Valley, Coal River, East Coast and the Channel.
“Some don’t have cellar doors, but then there’s others like Nocton Vineyard and Bream Creek Vineyard,” he said.
“We organise it in a collegiate system by vintage and variety so we learn about everybody else’s wines too.
“There are quite distinct regional characters to the wines.”
Red wine aficionados from around Tasmania and interstate visit Hobart for the event.
“It’s very popular. We also have sessions on advanced wine tasting and wine matching with Tim Goddard from Cool Wines,” John said.
There is music and food to complement the wines on offer.
The event will be held on May 20-21 at Princes Wharf 1, Hobart, from noon-5pm both days. Tickets are on sale via EventFinda for $25 or at the door for $30.
