TRAVELLERS in Western Australia who want to pull off the road and camp on Aboriginal land will soon have another place to do just that.
Construction has started on the first Camping with Custodians campground in the Pilbara, at Peedamulla Station near Onslow.
The 220,000-hectare Aboriginal-owned pastoral spread stretches from the North West Coastal Highway to the coast.
Camping with Custodians is a program developed by Tourism WA that was first introduced at Imintji in the Kimberley last May.
The idea is to keep it simple, giving travellers an opportunity to stay on Aboriginal lands knowing the proceeds of their stay will remain in the community.
It is also a chance for visitors to engage with Indigenous custodians and learn more about traditional customs and life on a pastoral station.
The station is home to a collection of heritage-listed buildings and structures – one of which is being restored for use as the campground reception office.
The nature-based campground will have powered and unpowered sites, gas barbecues, hot water showers and flushing toilets.
Peedamulla Station Campground is expected to open in August and will be the third Camping with Custodians campground operating in WA.
