USE common sense when posting pictures or video of loved ones online. That’s the message being delivered during Privacy Awareness Month 2017.
“Taking privacy precautions means protecting not just your own personal information but also that of your family and friends,” said NSW Attorney General Mark Speakman.
“Privacy manners include asking friends and relatives if they’re happy to have their photo tagged and posted on the internet.
“Using smart devices, mobile apps and online services is convenient and fun. However, it’s important to remember to protect your privacy and at the same time consider how your online activity might affect the people you care about.”
Acting NSW Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Coombs marked the start of Privacy Awareness Month in May by releasing new animations and posters to help people understand their rights under NSW privacy legislation.
“These resources explain in a user-friendly way the importance of protecting privacy,” she said.
“As technology and legislation evolve, it’s vital that organisations and individuals take responsibility and step up to the challenge of privacy management, and this starts with coming to grips with rights and responsibilities.
“There are laws in NSW around the collection, storage, use and accessing of personal and health information, and Privacy Awareness Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of these laws.”
