The Queensland Government has fired the first salvo in the lead-up to World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15).
It's launched an unprecedented multi-media campaign highlighting what Seniors Minister Coralee O'Rourke refers to as "the unacceptable behaviour " that elder abuse can be perpetrated.
"Research shows the most common offences are physical or emotional intimidation or financial abuse such as bank skimming and transfer of assets," Mrs O'Rourke said at the media launch of 'There's no excuse for elder abuse'.
"This campaign makes it absolutely clear that there is no excuse for elder abuse by highlighting the types of excuses perpetrators - often family members - commonly use to get away with their actions, comments such as 'It's going to be my money one day anyway', 'the house is my payment for looking after Mum' or 'Dad should know I've always had a temper'."
Look out for the elder abuse messages appearing in shopping centres, licensed venues, medical centres, on buses and via digital and social media advertising ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.'
Anyone concerned about an elderly person being abused and in need of assistance can call the Elder Abuse helpline on 1300 651 192.
