POLICE are calling on the community to regularly check on their neighbours after the death of an elderly couple in Palm Beach.
The couple, both aged in their eighties, were found in their Bynya Road home yesterday (Tuesday 18) by officers after concern was raised for their welfare. It is not known how long ago they died.
Police believe the husband, who cared for his disabled wife, passed away naturally while his wife subsequently died from lack of care.
The pair were described as "fiercely independent" who "consistently refused" aged care assistance and medical support but were "coping with their challenges".
"This is an opportunity to reflect on this tragedy and think about our elderly parents and neighbours and what we can do as individuals to prevent a recurrence of this terrible event," Northern Beaches Local Area Command officers said in a statement.
"If you are concerned about a neighbour who you haven't seen, knock on their door or give us a ring. We are more than happy to check on the welfare of the elderly.
"So just for twenty minutes, time to put down those iPhones and iPads, and hold back the selfies and making friends with people you don't know, and have a real conversation with your elderly neighbour who is living a simple life devoid of all electronic gadgets that contribute little to real community cohesion."
- The Australian Red Cross provides Telecross daily welfare calls to those living alone or at risk. Volunteers call every morning to check in, and if the calls aren't answered the organisation will take steps to check the recipient's welfare.
It's available to the frail and aged, those with a disability, are housebound or recovering from an illness or hospital stay, and carers.
