YOU can now experience two of Australia's first major military milestones thanks to a new app.
WWI: Fromelles and Pozieres lets users explore both the Battle of Fromelles and Battle of Pozieres using a 3D map and contemporary diary entries narrated by actor Hugo Weaving.
The Battle of Fromelles on July 19 1916 was the first major Australian engagement on the Western Front. The Australian 5th Division suffered 5533 casualties in just 24 hours, making it the bloodiest day in Australia's wartime history.
The Battle of Pozieres (July 23 - September 5 1916) involved three Australian divisions capturing and holding the village of Pozieres. When they were withdrawn, they had suffered some 24,000 causalities.
The app was launched late last year to mark the 100th anniversaries of the battles.
"This app will educate users about the experiences of the Australians who fought at Fromelles and Pozieres and the important contribution they made to the allied victory in the First World War," said Veterans' Affairs Minister Dan Tehan.
"I encourage people to download this free app and learn more about this important period of Australian history."
The app is the second in a series of six to be produced during the Anzac centenary period.
Gallipoli: The First Day was released in 2015 while four more apps are planned for release in 2017 and 2018.
