AUSTRALIAN motor racing legend Dick Johnson has spent more time than most behind the driver’s wheel – on the racetrack and on the road. So he was a good choice to help launch the inaugural Tidy Towns Navman People’s Choice award. The competition is a partnership between Keep Australia Beautiful, which conducts the annual Tidy Towns competition, and GPS brand Navman. While judges will travel the length and breadth of the country judging towns on tidiness and a rigorous set of social and environmental attributes, the People’s Choice award is purely about popularity so everyone can have a say. Everyone who votes or nominates a town will be in the running to win one of 10 top-of-the-range GPS to put them in the right direction when they hit our roads. “Australia is packed full of amazing regional towns that offer incredible experiences for visitors,” said Vivienne Palmer from the Australian Regional Tourism Network. “This is a great way to get recognition and encourage people to check out their country and, importantly, spend some tourism dollars that are vital to the sustainability and vibrancy of our towns.” To nominate a town or vote for your town, go to www.navmanpeopleschoice.com.au The website also contains a clear definition of what constitutes a town, as cities or suburbs will not be eligible to enter. The competition will run until May 31, with the winners announced in June.
