The Baw Baw District Police Senior Citizens Register has passed 1000 clients, with regular checks made to ensure their wellbeing and safety. Run by volunteers who make regular phone calls to 250 clients, the register ensures seniors feel safe in their homes and gives their loved ones peace of mind. It was set up as a crime prevention and community care initiative. A Safe Return service is also run for people in the district who have dementia, and there is a second register for retirement village residents who are prone to wandering away from home. Home security checks are conducted for each client by specially-trained volunteers. All services are free and open to any senior living full time within Baw Baw Shire. Once a person has joined the register they will be classified as an active client (receiving regular phone calls to check on their wellbeing), or an inactive client who remains on the database until they wish to become an active client. All clients receive an identity card to advise that their contact details are kept at Warragul Police Station in the case of an emergency. The Baw Baw District Police Senior Citizens Register office at Warragul Police Station is open every Wednesday, 10am-1pm. Details on 5622-7177. |
