A CHELSEA aged care home is a flurry of wool and busy hands as residents attempt to make 7777 pom-poms.
Their goal? To break the Guinness world record for the longest pom-pom garland or line of pom-poms.
The current record is held by the Australian Country Spinners from Wangaratta.
It was set in 2013 when they laid out 6977 woollen handmade pom-poms, which stretched 178.6 metres.
“Pom-pom making is something all residents can participate in, while working towards a common goal,” said Lifeview Argyle Court residential manager Katy Cavanagh.
“The number 7777 was chosen as a target for a range of reasons, including the view that seven is a lucky number, and residents believe they will need to make pom-poms seven days a week to reach their goal.”
So far 2000 pom-poms have been completed.
The world record attempt will take place on October 13 to coincide with the home’s participation in the Longbeach Urban Yarn Trail, where community organisations decorate their gardens and buildings in a storybook theme using only yarn.
In the meantime, the residents would love to hear from anyone who would like to help with making and donating pom-poms or wool to the cause.
