3Digital scanning could soon replace unpleasant denture fitting and reduce the time it takes to get dentures from days to minutes.
Fitting dentures is currently a long and sometimes painful process in which the patient has to visit the clinic on multiple occasions so that soft and hard plastic material resembling silly putty can be used to take exact measurements of the mouth. Failure to take exact measurement can cause discomfort and pain.
It's a process which has barely changed in 100 years.
HoloDent is the first holography scanning device for intraoral 3D modelling. It was developed by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Hadassah Medical Centre.
As well as addressing a huge market in the developed world, the technology could improve the accessibility of dentures for ageing populations in developing countries by eliminating the need for a dentist in these areas by providing access to a cost-effective digital solutions.
