AN orchestra featuring instruments made from recyclable odds and ends will share top billing at the Girgarre Moosic Muster at Girgarre in the Goulburn Valley from January 6-8.
The “junkestra” is the vision of multi-instrumentalist Peter Gibson, who conceived the idea after seeing a video of a recycled orchestra from Paraguay on YouTube.
Peter, from nearby Nanneella, said the group had already welcomed several members with some fascinating improvised instruments.
“We’ve already seen an instrument using wire strung along a broomstick across a biscuit tin, home-made flutes and whistles, and banjos made from hubcaps,” he said.
“Ideally, strings and woodwinds should be able to be tuned as near as possible to the key of C so players can jam together.”
The muster, which will be held in the Gilgarre hall and park, is free and offers interested beginners a range of Fender instruments to borrow and try, including guitars, ukuleles and banjos.
It will showcase a range of musical genres including bluegrass, folk, blues, country, pop, gospel and contemporary music.
There will be public concerts, walk-up performances, workshops and a junior muster for children.
