IT'S coming up to 100 years since the untimely death of the golden boy of Australian boxing, Les Darcy, in the US.
To mark the centenary, a DVD telling the story of the Maitland champion has been digitally remastered and released.
Originally made in 1998, the documentary, Les Darcy – The Maitland Wonder contains extensive archival footage, interviews and research revealing the man behind the legend.
Created by Sydney filmmaker Peter Fenton and produced by Anthony Buckley, the film depicts Darcy's progress from a blacksmith's forge in Maitland to the thunderous applause from capacity crowds in Sydney stadiums.

After an illustrious career not without controversy – especially in regard to wartime service – Darcy died on May 24, 1917, from medical complications, believed to be from dental work to replace knocked-out teeth.
