SCULPTURE by the Sea, Bondi, the world’s largest annual free outdoor public sculpture exhibition, celebrates a milestone birthday this year.
Now in its 20th year, the event returns to the spectacular Bondi–Tamarama coastal walk from October 20-November 6.
More than 100 works by Australian and international artists will go on show when the stunning stretch is transformed into a 2km-long temporary sculpture park.
One of Sydney’s best attended and most photographed events, it has attracted more than 500,000 visitors over the past 18 years.
People with a disability, or who are visually impaired, can book in for one of the free tactile tours. Guided by specialist staff from the Art Gallery of NSW, they will be encouraged to engage with sculpture through discussion and touch.
One-hour audio description tours are also available from Monday to Friday.
Early-evening tours take place on Tuesdays.
Free Aqualand Artist Talks will be held in MarksPark and Tamarama each weekend from 11am-3pm. There will be six 20-minute sessions a day.
For those with limited mobility or using a wheelchair – or who simply fancy an easy walk – there are suggested routes where nearly all of the exhibition can be seen while avoiding most of the stairs.
The blue route is for those not comfortable with stairs or walking long distances, focusing on MarksPark, where the Sculpture Inside gallery showcases smaller works, a pop-up cafe and accessible toilets. The red route is for those who are comfortable with some stairs, moderate slopes and walking over 1km.
